Journal of International Investment and Extractive Industry Law (JIIEIL)

The Journal of International Investment and Extractive Industry Law (JIIEIL) is Africa’s first collaborative, peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to advancing cutting-edge legal scholarship on international investment and extractive industry governance.

Founded by four leading African Faculties of Law, JIIEIL provides a credible and globally visible platform for interdisciplinary research that promotes fairness, sustainability, and responsible resource development. JIIEIL serves scholars, policymakers, legal practitioners, industry professionals, and civil society by delivering rigorous, policy-relevant insights that strengthen legal frameworks across Africa and beyond.

History of Founding Faculties

Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, South Africa

Established in 1908, the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Law is globally recognized for excellence, especially through its Extractive Industry Law in Africa (EILA) Unit. The EILA Unit offers a specialized LL.M, conducts impactful research, and delivers capacity-building programmes across Africa. It remains a continental leader in areas such as: Sustainability, extractive-industry governance, natural resource regulation, good governance and transparency

The Faculty of Law began in October 1985 as a department under the Faculty of Social Sciences in the then University of Cross River State, inheriting staff and students from the former Ime Umanah College of Law, Abak.

It became a full-fledged Faculty in 1986 and relocated to the Ikot Osurua campus in 1987. The Faculty produced its first law graduates in 1989, who were admitted to the Nigerian Law School and called to the Bar. Fully accredited by both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Council of Legal Education (CLE), the Faculty has consistently produced graduates who excel at the Nigerian Law School.

Founded in 1981, the Faculty of Law at Rivers State University is a pioneer in oil and gas legal education in the Niger Delta. It offers specialized postgraduate degrees in: Oil & Gas Law, Mineral Law, Environmental Law. The Faculty is widely respected for its strong practice-oriented research, including critical work on the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

As part of Mozambique’s oldest university, UEM’s Faculty of Law is the leading Law School in Mozambique in 1974. Its profile includes a Postgraduate and LL.M degree programmes in oil and gas law. The Faculty significantly contributes to national debates on gas governance, revenue management and institutional reforms. Its work continues to build Mozambique’s legal and technical capacity in the extractive sector.
